The Brief: Whittington Park in Holloway, North London, is a popular local park with impressive sports and community facilities. London Borough of Islington wanted to create a wildflower meadow, natural pond and plant up a swirling bedding scheme to the rear of the park close to a new sustainably built sports hall. The council wanted the scheme to be wildlife friendly and to be attract a range of species as well as natural and beautiful to look at.
Planting Scheme: It was important that the meadow and pond be planted exclusively with native species to create natural features with a national biodiverse identity. The beds were laid out in a contemporary swirling form and it was not inappropriate to plant these with a range of native and non native species. The main criteria with the beds was that the species planted provided wildlife value through ground cover, seasonal interest and abundant nectar.
